Victoria Secret Karen Lawsuit Update

Remember the video that surfaced in 2021 where two women were fighting with each other in a Victoria’s Secret shop in New Jersey? Yes, that actually got a lot of hits on social media platforms, particularly on TikTok. The incident was between a lady called Abigail Elphick later called “Victoria’s Secret Karen” and another lady, Ijeoma Ukenta, who was the one making a video of this whole thing happening. As you may already know, the name “Karen” is often used to describe a situation where a white lady feels entitled or privileged, more so in a case where there is a race factor involved. But who could have thought that this video would eventually result in so much legal drama and that we’d be talking about Victoria Secret Karen Lawsuit Update? So, let’s have a look at what it is all about.

The Viral Video and Public Reaction

As we already mentioned it was Ijeoma Ukenta who recorded this shopping scene at Victoria’s Secret. The brief clip shows Abigail Elphick visibly overwrought and distressed as soon as she becomes aware of her being filmed. As UKenta states, Elphick got too close to her which ignores the social distancing rules due to COVID-19. When Ukenta pointed that out and asked her to quiet down, Elphick was quite dramatic in her reply, crying, ordering Ukenta to stop the recording, and even falling on the floor. This act of her like a child or an entitled person was the thing that got this video more than 26 million views at that time.

Key Details Mentioned In The Lawsuit

If you watch it again, the video captures Abigail Elphick’s emotional breakdown, but it doesn’t show them having a talk at first. Reports say that Ukenta started recording when Abigail supposedly tried to hit her. After this, Abigail followed Ukenta into the shop and finally called the cops, saying that Ukenta made a threat against her. Even though there was all this fuss about it, neither of them got arrested at that moment.

Ukenta’s Perspective and Legal Standpoint

For Ijeoma Ukenta, she said over and over again that from her perspective taking a video of the incident was a way of self-defense. Being a Black woman, she believed that if the police were called and the story was told, her side might not be heard and the situation could further worsen, you know? Ukenta’s legal team defended her decision to shoot and publish the video, saying it was a decision based on her legal rights. She got the power to utilize the video of the incident and bring the public to see the way she was harassed.

Legal Developments and Lawsuits

One thing that got a lot of people talking and the media people buzzing about the case is the video which showed a physical confrontation between Abigail Elphick and Ijeoma Ukenta. And sure, despite all the intense public responses and the video going viral, neither Abigail Elphick nor Ijeoma Ukenta received any formal charges. Nevertheless, the battle in the court does go on though. Elphick’s legal team states that the video kinda makes fun of their client’s disability, and it was argued that the video showed her in a different way to defame her. The proceedings are still on, and there is no direction or agreement on the matter yet.
